1) The first beat

The first thing to do is find the first beat of the track. Try holding the tune on the firs beat and gently moving the deck back and forth over it so you get a feel for where it is this will help you let it go at the correct time. Some records have a long acapella or intro. You will find it easier to spin past this and find the first proper beat.

2) Beats and Measures

Nearly all dance music has 4 beats in a bar which means that things like breakdowns, buildups and things like new sounds and riffs being added to the loop usually happen every 16 or 32 beats ( multiples of 4 or 8 bars) so practice counting beats in your head 1234 1234 1234 1234 while you play a track to get the hang of it. Any way back to the point. Your mixes wont sound right unless you start the second record on one of these points in the record. For example 8 bars after the last breakdown.

3) Basic Mixer controls

At this stage there are really only a few of those knobs,switches,dials,faders and buttons, you see on your mixer, that you will need to use at this point.
The gain (usually the top of the row of knobs on each channel ) this sets the volume of the individual channels and allows you to get both tracks at the same level, which will help with any seamless mix.
The Cross Fader. I know it is obvious but this fades from one channel to another. Some mixers also curve control, this sets how sharply the cross fader fades from one to another. If it has curve control set it somewhere in the middle to start with.
The PFL or Pre Fade Listen button. This lets you chose which track to listen to so you can be playing one while lining up the other.

4) Nudging and rubbing

This is a way of temporarily speeding up or slowing down the record.
Nudging the record on. If the record is falling behind the other one press your finger firmly down near the center of the record ( on the liable somewhere ) and speed up the record momentarily until the record is back in faze with the other one.
Rubbing the side of the deck to slow the tune slightly if it is getting ahead of the other one. to do this place your finger on the side of the deck and press down gently until the music is back in time.

5) Matching the beat

This is the tricky part where we bring it all together.
Start by pressing the PFL button that corresponds to the track you need to match up
Now let the first beat go on one of those 16 or 32 beat points
Then listen carefully to the two tunes. If the tune you are lining up is falling behind nudge it forwards and speed the record up slightly using the pitch control on the deck. Or conversely if it is getting ahead rub and slow the record It sounds easy but it normal takes a long time to get the hang of it.
If you lose track of what you are doing just find the first beat and start again

6) Making sure

Once you think you have the two tunes lined up I always find it best to make sure. I like to press both PFL buttons and listen to both choons for a good 16 beats to make sure they don't fall out of phase. Then you can make the finest of adjustments so it is spot on.

7) The MIX

This is the best bit a beautiful and spiritual thing. Who would have thought that moving a slider from one side to another could have brought so much pleasure to so many people for so many years. ITS TIME..... Make the mix and hold your arms in the air triumphantly.
